- How did you come up with your business name?
Simple - It says what it does on the tin – a Centre that enables communication in Greenwich.

- What is your business?
Greenwich Communication Centre is a Community Interest Company. That means that the organisation has been set up in a special way that ensures its profits and assets for the benefit of our community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders.

Greenwich Communication Centre C.I.C provides a wide range of communication services to support the needs of the Greenwich community. Our services support our community to keep connected and communicating both face-to-face and online. Some of our ICT services are revenue generating and this revenue helps to fund our Pro Bono community services.

The revenue generating side of our business aims to provide a wide range of useful ICT related services, such as computer, tablet and smartphone repairs. We also provide public access to computers and the internet, as well as a range of office support services such as photocopying and printing together with a comfortable wi-fi lounge and café.

This valuable work funds our social investment projects which are focused on providing numerous pro bono services to the community which are focussed on:

Reducing digital exclusion through outreach technology support clinics.
Supporting disadvantaged people through digital skills, training and employment.
Improving economic development by supporting start-ups and early stage entrepreneurs to grow businesses, invest and employ.
Creating a greener environment

- Describe how you help your customers?
We help to keep our customers digitally connected.

- What service/product is your best seller, and why?
1) The general trend for Consumer IT is that it is getting smaller and more portable - even wearable. The more portable it becomes, greater are the opportunities to drop it in transit, so replacing screens on laptops, tablets and smartphones is a common one for us.
2) Other than that I’d say dealing with viruses, malware, spyware, ransomware and compromised systems from scams and attempted fraud. More and more individuals are targeted by criminals who seek to compromise their systems and access their bank accounts. So increasingly we are helping our customers to re-secure their systems and help them to report any attempted fraud and cybercrime attacks to Action Fraud http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud

- What is your biggest challenge?
Staying up to date with emerging technologies – both hardware and software.

- What advice would you give someone who wants to set up their own business?
Do something that the market needs (rather than wants). Be resilient. Think outside of the box. Never give up.

- What makes you enjoy what you do?
Greenwich Communication Centre C.I.C provides a number of specialist ICT services and as a result is highly valued by its customers. We are a unique organisation and we also invest more than £100,000 of in-kind investments into the borough each year! http://www.greenwichcc.com/social-value.html

- Why do you like trading in the area?
Our market is growing. The population of the borough is growing exponentially due to some of the largest developments in Europe taking place on our doorstep over time the population is likely to double and almost everyone now owns more than one device, which at some point or other they need help with.

- What exciting plans do you have for the business going forward?
We will be selling our laptop, tablet and smartphone services as a mail order service online by the end of the year, which means we will be able to help people with their devices as far away as the outer Hebrides! It will also enable us to provide a more accessible service to our local customers, who may be time-short or who have difficulty visiting our centre in person.

- Where do you live?
Greenwich, naturally!
